The Terracotta Gorgoneia of Poggio Civitate (Murlo)

Abstract/Sommario:
An unprecedented number of terracotta gorgoneia, the majority antefixes, has been uncovered by the Bryn Mawr College excavations at the site of Poggio Civitate (Comune of Murlo, Province of Siena). These excavations, operating since 1966 under the auspices of the Florence Archaeological Museum, have revealed the existence of an archaic Etruscan building complex, as well as traces of earlier structures datable to the Orientalizing period.
